Uganda Partner group activity

The Animal Welfare and Protection Organization (AWPO) in Uganda, have updated us on their June activity.
139 donkeys of various ages, sexes and physiological status underwent health examinations and treatment including demonstrations on harnessing at the household level given the Global COVID-19 pandemic risks.
47 related owners were sensitized on the best ways of caring, handling and provision of health services to their working donkeys as a compassion/kindness/humane strategy. This was aimed at the overall reduction in pain and suffering in the daily life of the animals such as at farm/household premises; during restraining; treatment; loading; transport; working and finally during the time of putting them to permanent rest of life.

Adequate water and feeds were generally available in AWPO operations’ area due to ongoing-rains. Owners were advised to give more time to their animals to feed and water.
While the poor owners and communities cannot do without their donkeys that provide them with extra livelihood sources however, due to need to extract more labour from these animals – some owners instil fear and distress into such animals through threats – kicks – beatings – overworking etc. We continued to use mobile animal clinics to mentor the owners out of instilling fear and distress to their beloved animals.

Keep up the great work, AWPO!
