Local Meru Villages benefiting from MAWO's clinics
The Meru Animal Welfare Organization (MAWO) is a non-profit organization which was has a mission of improving animal welfare by bringing awareness to the community and treatment of animals to ensure that they are in good health.
During June, a donkey clinic was held at Maroroni Village. A total of 121 donkeys were dewormed by using 1% Ivermectin to control both endoparisite and ectoparasites for the animal’s health.
10 donkeys had wounds mostly due to poor harnessing, cart, tying of the leg with narrow rope and some rare wounds due to biting each other. These wounds were cleaned with iodine, treated with pen strep (antibiotics), meloxicom (pain relief) and topical antibiotic wound spray.
Among of the management that was done during the donkey clinic was hoof trimming, in order to avoid rotting of the hooves as well as smoothing the hooves for pain relief during walking.
As some of the wound were due to poor harnessing, we carried out harnessing demonstrations to educate the community about the importance of harnessing for animal health.
