Animal Nepal said goodbye to a beloved resident

On 18 June 2020, our senior vet Dr Atish took the difficult decision to put our dear Menuka to sleep due to her deteriorating condition as stated in previous reports. Menuka had been getting weaker and less mobile due to her advanced years which was severely effecting her quality of life. With no sign of improvement despite intensive veterinary care, this very difficult decision had to be made. Menuka was our oldest donkey at about 20 years old. She was rescued from a brick kiln in Lalitpur and at the time her right hind leg was dislocated, which caused chronic issues to her leg and she walked with difficulty. We laid her to rest next to her beloved BB, who left us in January of this year. The two of them were always together in life, so it brings us some comfort in thinking that they are still together. Of all our shelter animals, Jackie will probably miss BB and Menuka the most. Being newly rescued, he was kept away from the younger animals and spent most of his time with BB and Menuka who were gentler and much more accepting! He now has started spending time with our other new rescue Paulie, even though they are still slightly cautious around one another, it seems like they will slowly grow to become great friends. This month, our veterinary team carried out hoof check and trimming of our sanctuary animals. This is usually quite uneventful but there are a few who really don’t like their hooves being touched so they were a little problematic this month, namely Moksh, Honey, Jackie and Pappu! On examination, all had healthy hooves and our team did not identify any issues aside from slightly overgrown hooves on some of them. All our animals are doing well and enjoying grazing on the lush grass brought on by the monsoon season. However, due to the daily heavy rainfalls, they are not able to spend as much time outside as they would have liked. We would like to express our sincerest gratitude to Animal Aid Abroad for their continued financial support in the running and maintenance of the sanctuary for our rescued equines in Dukuchhap.
