Work continues on the donkey sanctuary in Bukombe
The Donkey Sanctuary in Bukombe was established in October, 2018 for the purpose of rehabilitating badly injured, underfed and seriously sick donkeys.
In the Northern part of Tanzania, Donkeys serve in a wide range of industries, that includes households, markets, intensive kilns, farms, mines and forest.
In all of these situations they do the work of vehicles and machines while being mistreated with beating, overworking and the use of inappropriate ox yokes being commonplace.
This results in the poor welfare and health of working donkeys in an area where the animal health system is already poor.
Thus, AAA and TAHUCHA established a sanctuary in Bukombe for donkeys to receive medical, pain and food relief, however this goes along with community education for behavioural change.
Since its establishment in 2018, the donkey stable, food store, 150m network of water connections, portable troughs, two wells, two washrooms, diesel generator, rescue truck, constant medical supply and equipment and power house have all been instated.
In phase II, the "beautification phase", the team have extended water connections from 150m long to 300m long.
Two water troughs, and concentrate /supplement troughs have been installed.
Two water banks at 150m intervals from each other are also in the works, one is complete and construction is underway for the other, at this stage of the project.
It is great to see the progress of this sanctuary, stay tuned for more updates.
