An Update from Animal Nepal

Animal Nepal Dukuchhap donkey sanctuary have sent through their monthly report:

"On the date of writing this report (12 June), Nepal has finally announced a phased opening of the lock down, after 78 days. Movement has been restricted, but over the past month, it has been easier for our staff to travel with passes. Santa Bahadur and Masini are live-in caretakers so they are always with our animals, which is a huge relief for us, knowing that they are all well looked after.

Our vets, technicians and other staff are making regular visits to the sanctuary to check up on our residents and to deliver food and other essential supplies. As stated in our last report, Menuka, our oldest resident donkey has not been well, so our vet has continued to keep an eye on her. Sadly, her condition does not appear to be improving. Menuka does not have an illness, her condition is brought on by her advanced age and the rough life she lived prior to being rescued. She is very weak and has poor appetite. She now spends most of her time indoors in the stable, away from the rest of the equines but she doesn’t mind sharing her feed with our goats Jeevan, Chhori and Aasha. We are making sure she is comfortable and due to her poor appetite, we have changed her feed to encourage her to eat more. She is under observation and we continue to work towards her recovery.

The rest of our animals are doing really well and enjoying each other’s company. As the weather is getting hotter, they like to seek out the shaded areas whilst grazing in the daytime. In the coming week, our veterinary team will be carrying out hoof cleaning and other grooming activities for our residents.

The world outside is experiencing unprecedented times, but life inside the sanctuary is carrying on as usual, thanks to Animal Aid Abroad’s continued financial support in the running and maintenance of the sanctuary for our rescued equines in Dukuchhap.
