Many years ago Alexandria Zoo used to be a world-class facility but is now an inhuman, dirty, dilapidated shell of its former self. Animals are forced to be housed in tiny concrete cells and are fed nutritionally inappropriate foods. Medical checks and suitable care can not occur due to lack of funding, expertise and access to correct medicines. Many animals spend their entire lives in these tiny cages and do not display natural animal behaviours. All of the animals exhibit signs of extreme distress and mental trauma. Deaths occur regularly.
