Alexandria Zoo (11)
Egypt » Alexandria Zoo

Many years ago Alexandria Zoo used to be a world-class facility but is now an inhuman, dirty, dilapidated shell of its former self. Animals are forced to be housed in tiny concrete cells and are fed nutritionally inappropriate foods. Medical checks and suitable care can not occur due to lack of funding, expertise and access to correct medicines. Many animals spend their entire lives in these tiny cages and do not display natural animal behaviours. All of the animals exhibit signs of extreme distress and mental trauma. Deaths occur regularly.

The Man and His Donkey (7)
Egypt » The Man and His Donkey

This man's daily work is offering donkey rides to tourists in Cairo at the Pyramids. His donkey is his livelihood which allows him to support his family of 6 children. His total income is derived from this donkey and he is unfortunately unable to afford another donkey despite the animal is old, ailing and overdue for retirement. This is the story all over Egypt and is the case with most equine-owners there. On this scorching day Janet saw the man and the donkey at work and noticed the donkey's swollen, infected eyes. When the man was approached and an interpreter found, Janet offered assistance that the man was unable to afford. Veterinary treatment did not come easily as the vet was not on duty that day. After arranging to meet at the vet two days later, the man waited from sun-up for Janet to arrive so that he would not miss out on the opportunity for treatment. The donkey's eyes were treated and follow-up treatment was paid for a further three visits. A protective fly veil was also supplied. The man was incredibly happy and extremely grateful. His smile said it all!

WARNING: Graphic Images of Animal Cruelty (12)
Egypt » WARNING: Graphic Images of Animal Cruelty

These terrible images reveal animals who are literally worked to death or die through unthinkable animal cruelty. These animals are worked until they can no longer work and even when they are sick, old and injured they must continue to work until they either drop or can no longer walk. They are usually just left where they are to die.

Private zoos in Egypt are cause for extreme concern. Animals such as pigs are often fed live to lions as a tourist display. Safari parks are guilty of feeding live donkeys to lions for tourist amusement.

Dear friends,

At the Godavari Donkey Sanctuary it's getting colder and the donkeys have started showing off their winter coats. They look ever so smart!

The sanctuary presently houses 12 donkeys, including a temporary resident, Maneka.

Caretaker Thula Kanchha and his family are now experienced donkey handlers. Our vets, Sudip and Surendra, and programme manager Krishna
visit the donkeys on a daily basis.

The donkeys have visibly improved. Have a look at the difference in Kitchuri's pics. When the discarded half blind donkey was brought in 1.5 months ago she acted grumpy and depressed. Now she is a confident, happy resident at the sanctuary.

We like to thank Janet and other friends at Animal Aid Abroad as well as you as a sponsor for making it possible to help the suffering working donkeys of Nepal.  The sanctuary acts as a safe haven for discarded and handicapped working donkeys of Kathmandu Valley.

Now all we need is a bit of snow to take that perfect picture!
