A New Rescue and News on the Mobile Donkey Clinic

The Nowzad donkey stables in Kabul, Afghanistan has just gained a new resident, who we are guessing due to her determination to bite or kick all of us, has yet to understand how lucky she was to be found by our vet team. But I guess that is understandable after what she has been through for many years.

Shahzada; (Afghan Dari for Princess) was found abandoned by her callous former owner on the side of the road where she had collapsed, most likely to her old age as her front legs could no longer cope with the tremendous loads she has continually been forced to carry her entire working life.

And sadly; it would not have been a peaceful ending; a hungry stray dog pack lurked nearby with clear intentions of eating well that night.

Our team did not know the extent of Shahzada’s injuries but they knew there was no way they could just walk on by. A truck was rented and after a herculean effort, Shahzada was transported to the Nowzad clinic and safety.

Not that Shahzada knew that; her initial kicking and biting has continued even though we have been looking after her now for over three weeks but at least now she can stand successfully on her own! The open wounds she had on her front legs are healing well and the team are slowly gaining her trust…

Without doubt we now need to expand our stable; the most likely option being to purchase a secure paddock near to the clinic but further funding is desperately required before we can pursue that option.

The Holy month of Ramadan has just started so for us it will be a quiet period, our roving donkey patrols that deliver donkey welfare education on the side of the road have had to stop due to our staff observing the daylight fasting that is required, (40 C heat, still working but not drinking is no mean feat..).

The security situation is sadly not improving, the kidnap threat is at an all-time high but the Nowzad team are as determined as ever to continue making a difference and the support of Animal Aid Abroad and their amazing supporters is allowing us to do just that.[ Update from Pen Farthing, Founder NOWZAD]
