Stop Live Exports Committee

Stop Live Exports Welcomes Fremantle Council Decision

The hard work of Stop Live Exports' volunteers and supporters has resulted in the City of Fremantle making an historic decision to support a phase out of live exports.

Brad Pettitt, Mayor of Fremantle said, "The time has come for this cruel and unnecessary live export trade to be phased out and replaced with a trade that supports local jobs".

"This motion is not designed to move the trade south from Fremantle to Kwinana. We want it stopped all together and replaced with the less cruel and better economic outcome of frozen meat".

We welcome Fremantle Council taking this strong stance against live exports.  There are many animal welfare concerns with this trade, and despite industry claims, very little improvements to animal welfare have been made.

Not only are live exports cruel, but they don't make economic sense either.  Recent reports released show that a sheep processed domestically is worth 20% more to the Australian economy than one exported live, due to the capacity to value add in Australia.

Added to that, many West Australians are losing their jobs in the processing sector. Live exports are sending animals overseas that would normally be processed here.

All three levels of Government in Fremantle are now opposed to live animal exports. If you were one of the many people who contacted your local representative about live animal exports, we, and the animals say "thank you, your efforts are working".

State Petition

In June, Lynn MacLaren, Greens MLC will be presenting our State Petition to Parliament. The petition will show the State Government just how many people in WA are against the live export trade and support a phase out.    We will be holding a peaceful gathering outside of Parliament House, so please come down and show your support for Lynn and our petition.  Details are as follows:

Date:  22nd June 2010
Time: 1pm-2pm
Location: Parliament House, Harvest Tce, Perth
What to Bring: Just Yourself

Directions to Parliament House are listed on this website (click on Location Map)

Animal Welfare Unit

Many of you who have been receiving communications from us for a while have seen us asking for your help to write to the State Government regarding the sorry state of funding of the Animal Welfare Unit.

Currently the Unit has only one inspector down from the original six. The remaining Inspector is effectively desk-bound and therefore cannot cover saleyards, live export loadings and animal transport as well as farm animals in general across Western Australia.    The Stateline program has taken up the cause with a story that aired a few weeks ago regarding the Unit.  You can watch the story by going to the Stateline website

The animals need your help. There are many ways you can get involved:

Sending a real letter is very effective.  Express to your local member that animal welfare laws are useless unless there are inspectors to enforce them.

You can check to see who is your local member of Parliament at this website

It is more effective to contact your local member, but you can also post a letter to:

Hon. Colin Barnett MLA
24th Floor, Governor Stirling Tower
197 St George's Tce
Perth WA 6000

You can send a letter to the Barnett Government via the Animals Australia website by clicking here

You can sign the petition on the Petition Site, by clicking here

Thank You!

Thank you for your support!
