AAA assists working brick kiln donkeys in Nepal
Written by AAA
Created Monday, 09 February 2009
This week AAA sent $5,170 to Nepal to assist with the medical treatment of 500 donkeys working the brick kilns in the Kathmandu Valley.
At these kilns, donkeys are not given the basic requirements such as nutritious foods, water, rest, shelter, and are continuously overloaded and overworked.
Injuries go untreated and severely ill donkeys are left to die. Death is a welcome relief as the donkeys are beaten relentlessly and made to carry loads way past their capabilities.
AAA is assisting Animal Nepal to help these donkeys by providing a twice weekly mobile clinic to visit these kilns.
The brick kiln season has only just begun and already 5 donkeys have died, 3 have been rescued and are being cared by a local orphanage and the rest are being seen to by the Animal Nepal team twice weekly.
The unfortunate news is that this is only one district where this help is being given and there are 2 other districts that are yet to be seen due to lack of funds and manpower to help the donkeys in these other areas. We are hoping with more help and support we will be able to move into these other areas.
Special thanks to the following members of the WA Donkey Society - Mereana and Kevin Lewis, Helen Mc Intyre and the committee of the WA Donkey Society who kindly donated to our Nepalese Donkey Project. Your support is greatly appreciated.

The picture attached is of a donkey named Gandhi [ named by the staff and children at the orphanage] that was rescued from one of the kilns who unfortunately did not make it and died a few days later. The second picture shows the children and staff from the orphanage giving Gandhi a dignified farewell funeral. More pictures can be seen in our picture gallery of this donkey's rescue, his funeral and other pictures taken this week of the vet team visiting the kilns.
